The Bygones Collection at Holkham Hall
The lifetime collection of Dick Joice - known for his series of Bygones programs produced by Anglia Television has come to rest and be displayed to good effect by Viscount Coke in the old stable block at Holkham Hall.
Covering an amazing range of artefacts there are a few small steam engines
George Waller (Stroud) slide valved, Pickering governed, single cylinder horizontal. ex Dereham gas works.
Tangye 3 HP single cylinder slide valved vertical of about 1891.
Savage organ engine.
Lister and Branch banjo pump.
Along with some very fine old models and some internal combustion engines including a 25 hp Blackstone oil engined generating set and a couple of hot air engines.
The sole surviving Farmers Foundry portable from Great Ryburgh and a Tidman centre engine complete the steam side.
Longlands Farm on the Estate still has a 65 HP Garrett overtype semi portable in situ but it is not part of the museum and access permission is like rocking horse droppings.
Of course there is also the distraction of a visit round Holkham Hall for non engineering minded members of any party to allow the delights of 'Bygones' to be enjoyed in peace !
