'Caroline' at Gurteens
Gurteens textile factory at Chauntry Mill, Haverhill, Suffolk, was once powered by a single cylinder mill engine No. 519, built in 1879 by Hick Hargreaves of Bolton, it developed 100 horsepower at 60 rpm and drove the mill through four ropes from a flywheel 17 feet in diameter. Its 18" x 48" cylinder was fitted with Corliss valves and these were operated by Inglis and Spencer double eccentric trip or releasing gear.
Fortunately 'Caroline' is still with us - in an honourable retirement, disturbed only by doting visitors with their cameras and flashguns or by the occasional steaming !

If you were wondering where the flywheel is - it's on the other side of the wall

Caroline's 'sister' - 'Jane Dee' the only other surviving Inglis and Spencer fitted Hick Hargreaves engine can be viewed in steam at the Forncett Industrial Steam Museum.
