The Hunter and English

This inverted vertical single cylinder engine was built in 1900 by Hunter and English of Bow, who were in the steam engine trade for a very respectable period between 1791 and 1921. With a cylinder 12" bore by 16" stroke, the engine has provision for a Meyer expansion slide valve on its simple slide valve although it is not known if this was ever fitted, it run ungoverned and with a very heavy duty 5' diameter flywheel was used to drive a Beales rotating exhauster to pull gas from the retorts at Poplar gas works in London,
One of a pair donated for preservation by North Thames Gas, the other after a long period as a mobile exhibit has now found a fixed home at the Bygone Village at Fleggburgh near Gt Yarmouth.
