The Mistley Marshall
EDME's Maltings at Mistley near Harwich, along with all Maltings had a need for water in their process, this was satisfied by a deep well with three deep well pumps made by George Adlam of Bristol, the pumps operated from a magnificent gear driven forged iron three throw crankshaft which was driven by a Marshall MP class horizontal single cylinder steam engine No 65019 of 1914 vintage.
In time, ingress of seawater made the well saline so a deep borehole was sunk and utilised a compressed air lift to extract water, the air being provided by a Reeder (Nottingham) enclosed high speed single cylinder engine - effectively making the Marshall redundant. Ultimately even this bore went saline and they had to connect to the town mains. The Reeder was preserved locally.

The Marshall and pump were offered for preservation and were extracted over the well and several process lines and removed to Forncett by 1950 Landrover and Trailer.

Currently being rebuilt to drive a sawbench, which will render fire-wood used by the boilers down to manageable size and of course give the Marshall something to play with.
